Brendan Coughlin promoted to President at Citizens Financial Group
Citizens Financial Group, Inc. has recently announced strategic changes in its leadership. Brendan Coughlin, who previously served as Vice Chair and Head of Consumer, Private Banking and Wealth, has been promoted to President of the company. In his new role, Coughlin will report directly to Bruce Van Saun, Chairman and CEO of Citizens Financial Group. He will continue to lead Consumer Banking, Citizens Private Bank, Wealth, Enterprise Data & Analytics, and Marketing.
According to Van Saun, Coughlin has proven to be a strong leader with a successful track record in executing important initiatives. His leadership has played a vital role in transforming Citizens Financial Group into a top super-regional bank. Van Saun expressed confidence in Coughlin’s ability to drive the company forward, citing his passion and leadership as key factors in shaping the future of the organization.
During his 20-year tenure at Citizens, Coughlin has been instrumental in launching innovative offerings such as merchant point-of-sale financing partnerships with tech giants like Apple and Microsoft. He also spearheaded the national education refinance products and expansion of the consumer franchise into new markets. With a focus on growth, innovation, and enhancing customer experience, Coughlin’s efforts have significantly contributed to the strong performance and increased market share of the consumer franchise.
Coughlin was responsible for the successful national launch of Citizens Private Bank in 2023, which has seen substantial growth with $8.7 billion in high-quality deposits and $5.2 billion in assets under management. The bank’s Wealth Management capabilities have also expanded under his leadership, with the addition of new advisory teams in California, Boston, and Florida.

The company will initiate a search for his replacement, and Woods will work with the Finance team to ensure a smooth transition before departing in August 2025.
