Elon Musk faces allegations of unpaid millions in class-action lawsuit
Billionaire Elon Musk and his political action committee are currently embroiled in a legal dispute regarding alleged outstanding payments to individuals who assisted in gathering petition signatures for the 2024 election. The class-action lawsuit, filed by an unnamed Pennsylvania resident, claims that Musk and America PAC owe over $5,000,000 to more than 100 canvassers who participated in the petition process. These individuals were promised compensation for their efforts and have not received full payment for their work.
The lawsuit alleges that registered voters were offered $100 for signing a petition advocating for free speech and gun rights, with an additional $100 for each additional signature they helped secure. While the canvassers were paid their hourly wages and some referral fees, they claim that they have not received at least $20,000 in owed payments for their efforts in collecting signatures. The case, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, highlights the discrepancies in payment and the lack of response from Musk and America PAC despite multiple attempts to address the issue.
America PAC has denied any wrongdoing in response to the allegations. A spokesperson for the PAC, Andrew Romeo, stated that the organization is dedicated to compensating individuals for legitimate petition signatures and claims to have disbursed millions of dollars to canvassers in support of their cause. The spokesperson mentioned that payment delays may occur due to the verification process for eligible referrers and signers to prevent fraud, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the integrity of the petition process to eliminate any potential misconduct.
Despite America PAC’s assurances of processing payments, the lawsuit paints a different picture, indicating that several individuals have not received their full compensation for their participation in the petition campaign. The situation escalated when Musk and America PAC distributed $1 million checks at an event in Wisconsin aimed at endorsing a conservative judicial candidate. The legality and ethics of this distribution were challenged and brought before the state Supreme Court, raising further questions about the organization’s handling of financial matters.
As the legal battle unfolds, it remains unclear how the dispute will be resolved and whether Musk and America PAC will address the outstanding payments owed to the canvassers involved in the petition efforts. The lawsuit sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals seeking fair compensation for their contributions to political campaigns and emphasizes the importance of transparent and timely payment practices in such endeavors.
