Klarna chooses Walmart as new ‘buy now, pay later’ service provider
Klarna, a Swedish Fintech company, has recently announced a significant partnership with the retail giant Walmart to offer “buy now, pay later” services exclusively to Walmart’s customers. This collaboration will see Klarna’s services integrated into Walmart’s online and physical checkouts, replacing the existing provider, Affirm. The partnership comes on the heels of Klarna’s filing for an IPO in the United States, with the company aiming to raise $1 billion and achieve a valuation exceeding $15 billion.
Sebastian Siemiatkowski, the CEO of Klarna, described this partnership with Walmart as a “game changer.” By gaining access to Walmart’s vast customer base, Klarna hopes to strengthen its presence in the rapidly growing U.S. market. This move follows a recent agreement that allowed OnePay, a financial app, to acquire a significant number of shares in Klarna, marking a strategic development in the company’s growth trajectory.
While Affirm is currently a partner of Walmart, Klarna’s entry as the exclusive provider of installment loans is expected to shift the dynamics of the market. Affirm’s stock prices experienced a decline following the announcement, reflecting the impact of this strategic decision. The rivalry between Klarna and Affirm has been ongoing, with both companies vying for dominance in the U.S. market. Affirm’s CEO, Max Levchin, has emphasized the importance of differentiating the company to stand out among competitors, focusing on generating revenue from individual transactions as a key strategy.
Although Klarna boasts a broader global reach compared to Affirm, the company has made notable strides in expanding its presence in the U.S. market. In a statement made in April 2024, Klarna highlighted the growth in the U.S. and Germany as its primary markets, with the U.S. market steadily gaining momentum, often surpassing others on a quarterly basis. The partnership with Walmart marks a significant milestone for Klarna as it taps into new opportunities for growth and expansion, solidifying its position as a key player in the fintech industry.
