Duvernay’s top producers experiencing rapid changes in M&A
The landscape of top producers in the Duvernay formation is rapidly changing due to recent mergers and acquisitions. Significant transactions, such as Whitecap merging with Veren, Canadian Natural Resources acquiring Chevron assets, and Parallax Energy acquiring Vesta Energy, have reshaped the top players in the area. These companies have swiftly emerged as major contributors to the production output of the Duvernay formation.
Currently, the Duvernay formation contributes approximately 260,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) to production, with around 72,000 barrels per day (bbl/d) of condensate. The top producers with Duvernay production exceeding 10,000 boe/d are listed in Figure 1. It is important to note that the data presented reflects gross licensed production and does not consider any working interest sharing agreements. For example, KUFPEC held a 30% working interest in Chevron’s Duvernay production, which means that Canadian Natural Resources’ net production would only be 70% of the gross total if the agreement is still in place.
The list of top Duvernay producers includes companies like Whitecap and Veren, Canadian Natural Resources and Chevron, Kiwetinohk Energy Corp., Parallax Energy Operating Inc., Petrochina Canada Ltd., Paramount Resources Ltd., and Artis Exploration Ltd. Each of these companies plays a crucial role in shaping the production landscape of the Duvernay formation.
The production figures for each company highlight the significant contribution they make to the overall output from the Duvernay formation. Whitecap and Veren lead the pack with 70,486 boe/d of production, including 1,968 bbl/d of oil, 39,505 boe/d of gas, 22,168 bbl/d of condensate, and 6,845 bbl/d of natural gas liquids. Canadian Natural Resources and Chevron follow closely behind with 69,392 boe/d, comprising 147 bbl/d of oil, 38,005 boe/d of gas, 23,123 bbl/d of condensate, and 8,117 bbl/d of NGLs.
The collaboration and acquisitions within the industry are pivotal in driving growth, innovation, and efficiency in the production processes within the Duvernay formation. The recent M&A activities have led to the emergence of new major players and the consolidation of existing ones, resulting in a more dynamic and competitive landscape. The data provided serves as a valuable resource for understanding the significant changes in the top Duvernay producers and their respective contributions to the production output of the formation.
