Securities Market Infrastructure Institutions (MIIs) Introduce New Direct Payout System to Improve Efficiency

In recent news, Market infrastructure institutions (MIIs) have proudly announced the successful implementation of a new direct payout settlement mechanism for securities. This system will see clearing corporations transferring securities directly to investors’ accounts, eliminating the previous method where brokers held securities in a pooled account before passing them on to clients.

This transformative initiative, which became operational on February 25 with guidance from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), is set to enhance efficiency, transparency, and investor protection, as highlighted by the MIIs in a recent statement. By streamlining the process and ensuring the direct crediting of securities to clients’ demat accounts, this mechanism is a significant step towards bolstering market integrity and operational efficiency.

Although the direct-payout settlement was briefly halted on November 12 last year due to minor delays experienced during the initial beta phase, it was ultimately relaunched on November 11 to improve the settlement process for investors. Despite encountering some delays during the beta phase, the MIIs confirmed that the new system has been largely successful in achieving its objectives.

In response to the observed delays, the decision was made to temporarily revert to the previous clearing member pool settlement mechanism, effective November 12, to address and rectify any issues identified during the beta phase. This proactive approach underscores the commitment of MIIs to prioritize the smooth functioning of the market and uphold the interests of investors.

The implementation of the direct payout settlement mechanism marks a significant milestone in the evolution of securities settlement processes in India. By leveraging technology and innovative solutions, MIIs have not only enhanced operational efficiency but also ensured greater transparency and security for investors. This forward-thinking approach reflects a commitment to continuous improvement and a focus on delivering value to market participants.

As the new system paves the way for more streamlined and secure transactions in the securities market, stakeholders can look forward to a more seamless and reliable settlement process. With a strong emphasis on investor protection and market integrity, the direct payout settlement mechanism represents a positive step towards further enhancing the overall efficiency and effectiveness of India’s financial markets.
