Disney Removes Mention of Inclusion Programs in SEC Report Amid Trump’s DEI Purge

Disney has decided to scale back its efforts related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), with its recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) no longer mentioning a program geared towards “underrepresented voices.” This shift comes as a response to President Donald Trump’s removal of DEI initiatives from federal programs soon after taking office. The state of Florida, particularly Governor Ron DeSantis, has been a vocal opponent of what they refer to as the “woke agenda” and has had Disney in its sights for some time.

The Free Enterprise Project’s Stefan Padfield from the National Center for Public Policy Research highlighted a potential shift in focus by Disney regarding DEI initiatives, now that Trump is back in power. The removal of Disney’s “Reimagine Tomorrow” program, an online platform intended to amplify underrepresented voices and showcase DEI efforts, from its 2024 SEC 10-K report is a clear indication of this shift. Previously, Disney had taken steps to update its “Disney Look” appearance standard to foster an inclusive environment that celebrates authenticity among employees, but this has also been removed from the latest report.

In its 2023 filing, Disney had outlined its goals of developing the next generation of creative executives from underrepresented backgrounds through an incubator program. The report also detailed various learning opportunities and fellowships aimed at promoting dialogue among employees and external experts. However, in the 2024 report, while the incubator program remains in place, the development programs and learning opportunities are noticeably absent. Despite scaling back its DEI efforts, Disney introduced a new program called “Heroes Work Here” to support veterans of the US military and emphasized the importance of diversity through more than 100 employee-led organizations catering to diverse communities in its global workforce.

It is worth noting that while Disney has quieted down its “Reimagine Tomorrow” web portal as of late, it remains operational, although it has seen reduced activity. The company continues to showcase its DEI efforts through the “Belong” section of its website. Disney’s clashes with Florida authorities, particularly regarding the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, have led to repercussions, such as the removal of its preferential tax status in the state.

Recently, several major corporations including Walmart, Harley-Davidson, and Lowe’s have followed the trend of reversing or scaling back their DEI initiatives. This shift appears to be in response to political and social pressures, as companies navigate the complexities of promoting diversity and inclusion in a changing landscape.
