US Rep. Bryan Steil named chair of House cryptocurrency subcommittee

Wisconsin Congressman Bryan Steil has been appointed to lead the House Subcommittee on Digital Assets, Financial Technology, and Artificial Intelligence. This means he’ll be tackling topics like mobile banking and NFTs, as well as shaping legislation around cryptocurrency.

The crypto industry flexed its muscles in the 2024 election cycle, spending over $130 million through Fairshake, its PAC. Steil got a boost from independent spending of $764,206 to secure his seat, as reported by OpenSecrets.

In response to his appointment, Steil expressed excitement about the potential of technologies like financial apps and digital assets to transform our economy. He emphasized the importance of establishing clear regulations to guide this transition into the future.

House Financial Services Chair French Hill, a Republican from Arkansas, appointed Steil to the position. Hill has received support from industry leaders like the CEOs of Coinbase and Charles Schwab. One of Hill’s key initiatives involved passing a bipartisan bill for crypto-friendly federal regulations, in which Steil played an essential role.
