Rocket Lab Chosen by Kratos for Hypersonic Test Launches for DoD Using HASTE Technology
Rocket Lab, a prominent launch services and space systems company, has recently been chosen to join the team led by Kratos Defense & Security Solutions for the Multi-Service Advanced Capability Hypersonic Test Bed (MACH-TB) 2.0 program. With a total potential value of $1.45 billion over five years, this contract aims to support the National Hypersonic Initiative 2.0 by creating a cost-effective flight test bed to enhance hypersonic flight test capacity.
Kratos will take on the prime role in Systems Engineering, Integration, and Testing, while Rocket Lab will be part of the subcontractor team providing crucial services like systems engineering, assembly, integration, test, mission planning and execution, and launch services. Rocket Lab has already demonstrated its capabilities by successfully conducting multiple hypersonic test launches using their HASTE rocket from their location in Virginia.
The HASTE rocket is a suborbital version of Rocket Lab’s Electron launch vehicle, featuring cutting-edge technology like carbon fiber composite structures and 3D printed rocket engines. With a modified upper Kick Stage tailored for hypersonic tests and a payload capacity of up to 700 kg, the HASTE rocket, along with the Electron launch vehicle, has launched over 200 payloads from Rocket Lab’s facilities in the US and New Zealand.
Brian Rogers, Rocket Lab’s Vice President of Global Launch Services, expressed enthusiasm about contributing to the MACH-TB program. He highlighted Rocket Lab’s commitment to advancing hypersonic innovation and serving the US Department of Defense by providing high-cadence hypersonic technology through the HASTE launch vehicle.
Rocket Lab, established in 2006, is renowned for its successful mission record in providing launch services, satellite manufacture, spacecraft components, and on-orbit management solutions. With a focus on making space more accessible and affordable, Rocket Lab’s work has enabled numerous organizations to deploy satellites for various purposes, from scientific research to national security operations. The company is also developing the Neutron launch vehicle for constellation deployment to expand its services further.
