LG Electronics Q4 operating profit decline

LG Electronics, a leading home appliance maker in South Korea, recently estimated a more than 53% decrease in its fourth-quarter operating profit compared to the previous year. The company reported that its operating profit for the last quarter of December dropped to an estimated 146.1 billion won ($100.7 million) from 312.5 billion won in the same period in 2023. Despite this, sales saw a slight increase of 0.2% to 22.77 trillion won.

Looking at the bigger picture, for the entire year of 2024, LG Electronics stated that its operating profit likely declined by 6.1% to 3.43 trillion won, while sales climbed by 6.7% to reach a record high of 87.74 trillion won. The company attributed the decrease in operating profit to rising shipping costs and one-off costs related to stock consolidation efforts, but highlighted the strong performance of its flagship home appliances business. In fact, LG Electronics’ home appliances unit is expected to achieve annual sales of over 30 trillion won for the second consecutive year in 2024.

LG Electronics will be releasing its final earnings report later this month. In other exciting news, the company has announced a strategic partnership with Microsoft, with the goal of leading artificial intelligence (AI) innovations. By combining customer insights from various devices and spaces with Microsoft’s advanced AI technologies, the two companies aim to develop AI agents for use in homes, vehicles, hotels, offices, and more. CEO Cho Joo-wan mentioned during a recent press event at CES 2025 in Las Vegas that this collaboration will pave the way for new AI developments.

As part of this partnership, LG Electronics has integrated Microsoft’s speech recognition and synthesis technologies into its AI home hub project. This integration allows the AI to understand customers’ diverse accents in different situations. Together, LG Electronics and Microsoft are planning to co-develop a new AI agent that not only interacts with customers, but also anticipates their needs and preferences.

Overall, LG Electronics is making strategic moves to stay at the forefront of technological advancements and offer innovative solutions to its customers.
