Economic Imbalances in Morocco: Call for Stronger Market Oversight by Abdullah Bouano
Morocco has been grappling with economic imbalances in its markets, with concerns being raised by Abdullah Bouano during the National Forum of Local Bodies for the Moroccan Space for Professionals. Bouano highlighted the rising prices of white meat as a significant issue, pointing out that the hike seems unjustified given the current conditions. He emphasized that the gap between white meat and red meat prices is not substantial, hinting at potential monopolization by big players in the market as a reason for the price surge.
In his address, Bouano underlined the concentration in the white meat market, noting that a few companies and individuals are controlling prices unduly, impacting citizens’ purchasing power. He stressed that these entities are reaping excessive profits at the expense of consumers, effectively monopolizing the market to the detriment of the people. Seeking a remedy, he urged for stricter oversight by the Competition Council to counter this monopolistic behavior and ensure fair competition to benefit consumers.
Shifting focus to egg prices, Bouano pointed out that producers are adopting similar strategies to manipulate prices, creating an artificial shortage to boost prices, especially during high-demand periods like Ramadan. This manipulation leads to increased costs for consumers, particularly for local eggs, affecting citizens’ budgets. He called on the government and relevant authorities to step in and address these imbalances by enhancing market oversight and advocating for fair competition to safeguard consumers’ interests.
By advocating for stronger oversight and fair competition, Bouano aims to protect consumers from market manipulation, stabilize prices, and alleviate the economic challenges faced by citizens. His call underscores the importance of ensuring a level playing field in Morocco’s markets to promote transparency, prevent abuse, and support the well-being of the population.
