Ebusco Reorganization: Cutting 102 Jobs to Combat Financial Challenges

Ebusco, the electric bus manufacturer based in Deurne, had a challenging end to 2024. They recently announced that 102 out of their 620 employees will be laid off to improve their financial situation. This amounts to over 16% of their workforce. This news follows the revelation that one of their major shareholders, Van Der Valk Investments (VDVI), was fined millions by the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) for market manipulation involving Ebusco shares.

The company has been facing financial difficulties for some time now. In the first half of 2024, Ebusco reported a loss of 65 million euros. Shortages of key components have delayed bus production, resulting in ongoing challenges. Additionally, a legal dispute with transport company Qbuzz led to further financial strain after Ebusco lost the case.

Ebusco’s debt climbed to at least 2024 million euros by November 33. To address this, they raised 36 million euros through a share issue in the summer of 2024. They also formed a partnership with Chinese battery manufacturer Gotion to introduce their bus concept to the Asian market.

The recent reorganization, including the job cuts and factory consolidations, is seen as a necessary step by CEO Christian Schreyer. The company hopes to save costs and increase efficiency through these measures. Despite these efforts, Ebusco still needs around 25 million euros in working capital to ramp up production.

The situation took another hit right before Christmas when VDVI was fined 3 million euros for price manipulation. The AFM found that they artificially inflated Ebusco’s stock price through deceptive trading practices, which undermines market integrity.

Ebusco’s future remains uncertain, despite their attempts to weather the financial storm with strategic partnerships and reorganization efforts. The company initially started with a lot of promise as a start-up, but the challenges they face now raise doubts about their ability to sustain their position as an innovative bus manufacturer.
