Crypto Mogul Do Kwon Extradited to US, Facing Federal Fraud Charges
Disgraced crypto tycoon Do Kwon, a key player in the 2022 collapse of TerraUSD and Luna coins, has been brought to the United States to face federal fraud charges after being extradited from Montenegro by the FBI. This move comes after over a year and nine months since his initial arrest at the Podgorica International Airport.
At the age of 33, Kwon, also known as Kwon Do-hyung, co-founded Terraform Labs, the company behind the collapsed cryptocurrency firm responsible for TerraUSD stablecoin and Luna tokens. His indictment in New York includes charges of securities fraud, wire fraud, commodity fraud, and conspiracy to manipulate market prices.
Accusations against Kwon involve deceiving investors about blockchain technology and spreading false information through media outlets. The collapse of TerraUSD and Luna coins is estimated to have caused over $34 billion in global financial losses.
After fleeing from Korea following the collapse, Kwon was apprehended in Montenegro on charges of possessing a forged passport. Both Korea and the U.S. sought his extradition, with the U.S. ultimately succeeding. If convicted in New York, Kwon could potentially face a sentence of over 100 years based on the U.S. sentencing guidelines.
In addition to the criminal charges, Kwon had previously lost a lawsuit filed by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), agreeing to pay $4.47 billion in restitution and fines for deceiving investors about Terra’s stability, resulting in substantial investment losses.
While legal proceedings against Kwon continue, the extradition to the U.S. marks a significant step in the pursuit of accountability for his role in the cryptocurrency collapse.
