Johnny Russell, Co-Star of Shirley Temple in ‘The Blue Bird,’ Passes Away at 91

John R. Countryman, known professionally as Johnny Russell, has sadly passed away at the age of 91. During his acting career as a child actor, Russell starred alongside big names like Barbara Stanwyck, Tyrone Power, Shirley Temple, and Jimmy Stewart before transitioning to a distinguished career in the U.S. Foreign Service.

In the 1940 fantasy film “The Blue Bird,” Russell played the role of Tyltyl, the younger brother of Shirley Temple’s character, Mytyl. The movie, produced by Fox, was intended as a response to MGM’s “The Wizard of Oz” and followed the siblings on a series of magical adventures.

Russell’s career also included roles in “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” “Always Goodbye,” and “Jesse James” before he shifted his focus to diplomacy. He served as a U.S. diplomat and ambassador in the Middle East and Africa, showcasing his versatility and talent both on and off the screen.

Sadly, Russell passed away on December 14 in Loudoun, Virginia, following a short battle with pneumonia. His daughter, Vanessa Countryman, who serves as the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Secretary, confirmed his passing to The Hollywood Reporter.

Despite his brief stint in Hollywood, Russell made a lasting impact with his performances and his subsequent career in diplomacy. His work will be remembered fondly by fans and colleagues alike, marking a significant loss in both the entertainment industry and the realm of diplomatic service.
