2024: A Look at Crypto’s Biggest Advances
In 2024, the cryptocurrency industry saw significant growth and solidified its position as a major player. Despite the aftermath of the 2022 cryptocurrency meltdown, this year proved to be pivotal for the industry.
Even before President-elect Donald Trump promised to make the U.S. the “crypto capital of the planet,” the industry was already making strides towards mainstream acceptance among traditional financial institutions. According to Patrick Kirby, policy counsel at Crypto Council for Innovation, the industry has come a long way with key milestones such as the approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs and Ethereum ETFs in the same year.
Throughout the year, there were major victories for the industry, with Bitcoin reaching new records, legal cases unfolding, and electoral wins setting the stage for crypto’s influential role in the upcoming Trump administration.
One of the most significant indicators of the industry’s maturity and mainstream adoption was the embrace of traditional financial institutions through the introduction of popular investment vehicles known as exchange-traded funds (ETFs). These ETFs provide investors with exposure to digital assets without direct ownership. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission approved 11 spot Bitcoin ETFs in January, paving the way for trading in U.S. markets for the first time in history. The ETFs have already amassed over $120 billion in BTC, which is approximately 5.76% of its market cap. Similarly, U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs attracted $14.28 billion in net assets, accounting for 2.93% of ETH’s market cap. This growth demonstrates the increasing comfort levels with crypto among mainstream institutions.
The year also saw a crackdown on crypto-related crimes, with notable cases such as the indictment of Frank Ahlgren III for underreporting Bitcoin gains, the sentencing of Sam Bankman-Fried for fraud and money laundering, and the guilty plea of Alexander Mashinsky for federal fraud charges.
In the political arena, the 2024 presidential election highlighted the growing influence of crypto as a major player in U.S. politics. Crypto donors surpassed traditional heavyweights like oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, and Wall Street, contributing a record $238 million. The influx of crypto money has raised questions about accountability and the influence of major players in politics.
Looking ahead, the crypto industry is already gearing up for the 2026 midterms, with significant contributions being made towards campaigns. The biggest crypto industry super PAC, Fairshake, has allocated $103 million, and Ripple’s CEO, Brad Garlinghouse, has committed $25 million.
Overall, 2024 was a transformative year for the cryptocurrency industry, marking significant milestones and solidifying its position in the financial and political landscape.
