2 Connecticut Stores Close in Walgreens Consolidation Plan

Recently, two Walgreens stores in Connecticut closed their doors as part of a larger plan to reduce the chain’s total number of stores by 500 this fiscal year. The affected stores were located at 1471 Whalley Ave. in New Haven and 25 East High St. in East Hampton.

This decision comes on the heels of Walgreens’ announcement in their fourth-quarter earnings report that a total of over 1,200 stores will be closing over the next three years as part of a financial restructuring plan. When the plan was first revealed earlier this year, the specific locations were not disclosed, leaving many customers uncertain about the fate of their local store.

For residents in East Hampton, the closure of the East High St. store means that the closest Walgreens is now located 7.1 miles away in Portland. Other nearby options include stores in Middletown and Colchester. In New Haven, while the Whalley Ave. store is no longer operational, customers can still visit other nearby Walgreens locations on York Ave., Whalley Ave., and Foxon St.

Despite reporting a fourth-quarter loss of $3 billion, Walgreens remains optimistic about the future. CEO Tim Wentworth expressed confidence that the ongoing turnaround efforts will lead to significant benefits for both the company and its customers in the long run.

Connecticut residents will still have access to a variety of Walgreens locations across the state, including in towns like Hartford, New Haven, and Stamford. With these closures, the company is focusing on a strategic plan to ensure its financial stability and continued success in the changing retail landscape.
