Cryptocurrencies’ Increase in Terror Financing and Corruption, EAG Chairman Notes

The chairman of the Eurasian Group (EAG), Yuri Chikhanchin, recently addressed the issue of the misuse of cryptocurrencies for funding terror activities and corrupt practices. Speaking at a workshop on “Innovation Finance” in Indore, Chikhanchin emphasized the need for governments to adopt new measures and tools to combat this growing problem. The EAG is particularly concerned about the use of virtual assets, such as cryptocurrencies, in financing terrorism and corruption.

Chikhanchin highlighted the EAG’s discussions on virtual assets earlier in the year, where they addressed the legal regulation of risks associated with financial innovation and emerging technologies. He called on colleagues from the Asia-Pacific Group (APG) to join forces and collaborate on implementing measures to mitigate these risks and share best practices.

As financial innovation continues to evolve, it opens up new avenues for fraud, money laundering, terrorism financing, and market manipulation. Chikhanchin stressed the importance of governments having the tools to detect and counter these crimes effectively. Prevention is key, especially as the threat of terrorism remains high and poses a significant challenge to society and international security.

During the workshop, Vivek Agarwal, Head of the Indian Delegation and Additional Secretary of the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, and Mitsutoshi Kajikawa, APG Co-Chair, were also present. The EAG meeting, attended by around 200 foreign and 60 Indian delegates, including representatives from organizations like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), is set to conclude on November 29.

Chikhanchin’s remarks, originally delivered in Russian, were shared by the Public Relations Department of the Government of Madhya Pradesh. This development underscores the urgent need for coordinated action to address the misuse of cryptocurrencies in funding illicit activities.
