SEC Filed 583 Enforcement Actions In 2024, Obtaining Orders For $8.2B In Financial Remedies
In the year 2024, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) made a significant impact by filing 583 enforcement actions, resulting in orders for $8.2 billion in financial remedies. This marks the highest amount in SEC history.
Out of these actions, 431 were “stand-alone” actions, 93 were “follow-on” administrative proceedings, and 59 were actions against issuers for delinquent filings with the SEC. The $8.2 billion in financial remedies included $6.1 billion in disgorgement and prejudgment interest and $2.1 billion in civil penalties, showcasing the SEC’s commitment to upholding financial integrity.
Notably, one of the largest securities fraud cases in U.S. history contributed to 56% of the financial remedies ordered. SEC Chair Gary Gensler praised the Division of Enforcement for holding wrongdoers accountable and promoting market integrity for the benefit of investors and issuers.
During fiscal year 2024, the SEC obtained orders barring 124 individuals from public company officer and director positions, returning $345 million to harmed investors. The SEC also received a record-breaking number of tips, complaints, and referrals, demonstrating heightened vigilance in enforcing securities laws.
The Division of Enforcement remains focused on addressing emerging threats like artificial intelligence misstatements and social media fraud, all while ensuring compliance and investor trust. This dedication from the SEC’s talented staff and the increase in whistleblower awards totaling $255 million are vital in safeguarding investor interests and market trust.
