Binance’s Strategy of Branding with MAGA
President Donald Trump has significantly increased his wealth during his time in office, with significant support from Binance, the largest crypto exchange globally. Binance has played a crucial role in boosting the Trump family’s crypto venture, World Liberty Financial, by serving as its primary market and facilitating the sale of billions of dollars worth of tokens. In fact, Binance employees even developed the code for USD1, Trump’s stablecoin pegged to the US dollar.
However, Binance has faced numerous legal challenges and controversies for its involvement in facilitating illicit financial activities, such as cybercrime, sanctions evasion, and support for extremist groups. During the Biden administration, former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao, also known as CZ, faced federal charges for violating anti-money laundering laws and the company agreed to pay a hefty $4.3 billion fine. Additionally, the SEC filed a lawsuit against Binance for various violations, including market manipulation and mishandling customer funds.
Surprisingly, under President Trump, the legal landscape shifted in favor of Binance. The SEC dropped its lawsuit, and Trump even pardoned CZ. Reports suggest that Binance, with Trump’s backing, sought less government oversight, and CZ attended a crypto summit hosted by World Liberty Financial at Mar-a-Lago, attended by notable figures like Eric Trump and top industry executives.
Following these developments, Binance faced renewed accusations of misconduct, including operating in violation of sanctions in Iran and facilitating transactions to entities associated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. Reports also surfaced of Russian officials using Binance to pay crew members of oil tankers bypassing international sanctions related to Russia’s conflict in Ukraine.
Binance’s decentralization strategy, moving its operations to crypto-friendly regions like the United Arab Emirates and the Cayman Islands, has allowed it to handle legal scrutiny worldwide. Despite facing investigations for money laundering and tax fraud in France, Binance has thrived, adapting to challenges such as the imprisonment of its CEO and disputes with governments over currency manipulation. Presenting itself as a force for financial empowerment, Binance has expanded its reach in the global south, particularly in Africa, Pakistan, and southeast Asia, offering free educational courses on crypto finance.
Although Binance has become less cooperative with government requests for data and legal assistance, the company portrays itself as a law enforcement ally, providing training in blockchain forensics globally. Binance maintains a complex global presence, evading legal restrictions and jurisdictional limitations, to continue its operations while positioning itself as a champion of financial freedom.
