Agreement with Vanguard to reduce energy expenses in Iowa

A recent settlement with The Vanguard Group in Iowa focuses on reducing energy costs and addressing alleged price inflation in the “green energy” sector. Attorney General Brenna Bird, along with attorneys general from 12 other states, achieved this groundbreaking result as part of a broader lawsuit against asset managers BlackRock, State Street, and Vanguard.

The lawsuit’s core objective was to combat market manipulation and cut electricity costs nationwide. Vanguard, as part of the settlement, has agreed to allow investors to vote their own shares, a significant step that sets a new industry standard. This move signifies a victory against price inflation and sets a precedent for institutional investors.

Attorney General Bird emphasized the importance of protecting consumers from paying higher energy prices due to a “woke Wall Street agenda.” She expressed gratitude towards Vanguard for committing to higher industry standards and resolving the case. The focus now shifts to addressing issues with BlackRock and State Street, ensuring competitive markets that benefit Iowans and all Americans.

As part of the settlement terms, Vanguard will refrain from imposing agenda-driven objectives that could impact customer profitability. The company pledged not to influence business strategies or threaten withdrawals based on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria. Additionally, Vanguard will compensate the states involved with a payment of $29.5 million.

One significant aspect of the settlement includes providing proxy voting rights to investors in funds that represent at least 50% of assets in U.S. equity funds advised by Vanguard. This move empowers customers to have a say in business decisions and promotes transparency in the company’s operations.

The leadership behind this initiative comes from Texas, with support from other states such as Iowa, Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, West Virginia, and Wyoming. This collaborative effort showcases a united front in advocating for fair and competitive markets that benefit consumers and uphold ethical standards in the asset management industry.
