FTSE MIB drops more than 1%
The FTSE MIB experienced a decline of more than 1% on Wednesday, dropping to 46,280 points. This decrease followed a relatively quiet session the day before and was primarily driven by losses in the financial sector. FinecoBank reported stable net profits for the year 2025, but still saw a sharp drop in its stock price. Additionally, Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena faced a 2% decline after news broke that board member Stefano Di Stefano would be leaving due to an ongoing insider trading investigation.
Other major financial institutions in Italy also saw negative movements, with Banca Mediolanum down by 7.4%, Mediobanca by 2.3%, UniCredit by 1.4%, and Intesa Sanpaolo by 2.2%. The defense company Leonardo also experienced a decline of over 1% amid reports that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was planning to announce presidential elections and a potential peace deal referendum.
On a more positive note, Ferrari saw an increase of over 1% after providing optimistic guidance that indicated strong demand for their luxury supercars. This positive news helped offset some of the losses in the market. In terms of economic indicators, Italy’s industrial output showed a promising rise of 3.2% year-on-year in December, signaling the strongest growth in over three years.
Overall, the FTSE MIB’s performance reflects the ongoing volatility and uncertainty in the markets, with factors like company earnings, geopolitical events, and economic data all playing a role in shaping investor sentiment. As always, it’s essential for investors to stay informed about market developments and trends to make well-informed decisions about their investments.
