NioCorp Developments praises White House and EXIM for bold “Project Vault” initiative
NioCorp Developments commends the White House and the Export-Import Bank of the United States for their ambitious “Project Vault” initiative to establish a U.S. Strategic Critical Minerals Reserve. This innovative effort aims to reduce American reliance on foreign-produced critical minerals, a crucial step towards enhancing national security and empowering U.S. manufacturers.
The collaboration between the government and industry involves an $11 billion contribution from EXIM, along with approximately $1.67 billion in initial funding from prominent companies like General Motors, Stellantis, Boeing, Corning, GE Vernova, and Google. The Reserve will be enabled by metals trading firm Traxys, marking a significant advancement in securing a stable supply chain for critical minerals within the country.
Mark A. Smith, Chairman and CEO of NioCorp, lauded the initiative as a much-needed public-private partnership that paves the way for the expansion of domestic critical minerals production and integrated supply chains. He commended President Trump and EXIM Chairman John Jovanovic for their visionary approach towards enhancing U.S. national security and economic resilience.
The recent Section 232 investigation conducted by the Commerce Department highlighted the risks associated with heavy reliance on foreign processed critical minerals, emphasizing vulnerabilities in the supply chain, import dependence, and price volatility. In response, the Presidential Proclamation issued on January 14 authorized measures to combat price manipulation by foreign governments and promote domestic production, reinforcing the government’s commitment to reducing the import reliance on processed critical minerals.
Mr. Smith emphasized the importance of breaking China’s stronghold on critical minerals to safeguard America’s economic and national security interests. He expressed gratitude towards the Administration’s leadership and EXIM’s dedication to bolstering U.S. manufacturers and critical minerals producers. NioCorp reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Elk Creek Project and contributing American-made critical materials to fuel the advancement of U.S. industries into the future.
NioCorp, through the Elk Creek Project, aims to produce niobium, scandium, and titanium, with potential for several rare earth elements. Niobium is crucial for specialty alloys and High Strength, Low Alloy steel, widely used in automotive, structural, and pipeline applications. Scandium enhances the strength and corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys, with applications in advanced solid oxide fuel cells. Titanium plays a vital role in lightweight alloys, pigments, aerospace, armor, and medical implants. Additionally, magnetic rare earths like neodymium, praseodymium, terbium, and dysprosium are essential components in neodymium-iron-boron magnets, extensively used in defense and civilian sectors.
In conclusion, the “Project Vault” initiative signals a significant step towards securing a stable supply of critical minerals within the U.S., prioritizing national security and economic autonomy. The strong collaboration between government agencies, industry leaders, and critical mineral producers underscores a shared commitment to reducing dependence on foreign sources and strengthening the foundations of American industries.
