Costco issues recall for mini beignets in 22 states over undeclared allergen

Costco recently announced a recall for one of its bakery items in multiple states due to an undeclared allergen. The affected product is the mini caramel-filled beignets that were mistakenly packaged with mini beignets filled with chocolate hazelnut. This mix-up could be dangerous for individuals with tree nut allergies, especially those sensitive to hazelnuts or filberts, as consuming the mislabeled product could lead to severe and life-threatening allergic reactions. The mislabeled batches were sold in 22 states between Jan. 16 and Jan. 30, 2026, and can be identified by item number #1181272.

In response to the recall, Costco issued an apology for any inconvenience caused and advised consumers not to consume the mislabeled beignets but instead to return them to Costco for a full refund. Any customers with concerns or questions about the recall can find more information on Costco’s customer service website. The recall affected the following 22 states: Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington.

This recall comes on the heels of a class-action lawsuit involving Costco’s popular $5 rotisserie chickens. The lawsuit, initiated by two customers in California, alleged that Costco misled consumers by falsely advertising that their Kirkland Signature Seasoned Rotisserie Chickens contain “no preservatives.” However, laboratory tests showed that these chickens actually contain two preservatives, sodium phosphate, and carrageenan, despite the claims made by the company.

The Kirkland Signature Seasoned Rotisserie Chickens have long been a staple of the Costco brand and are often considered to be a loss leader aimed at attracting customers to the store. Despite the cost of production and inflation, the price of these iconic rotisserie chickens has remained below $5 for decades. This price strategy is designed to entice customers into the store in the hope that they will purchase additional items while shopping.

In light of these recent developments, Costco remains committed to ensuring customer safety and satisfaction. The company’s swift response to the beignet recall and its transparency regarding the preservatives found in its rotisserie chickens demonstrate its dedication to quality assurance and consumer trust. As a renowned wholesale retailer, Costco’s reputation hinges on its ability to deliver high-quality products and reliable information to its loyal customer base. The recall and lawsuit serve as reminders of the importance of accurate labeling and transparency in the food industry to protect consumers’ health and well-being.
