Novak Djokovic ends involvement with players’ association he helped create

In a surprising turn of events, Novak Djokovic has officially severed ties with the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), an organization he helped establish, citing a misalignment of values and principles. Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, alongside retired Canadian player Vasek Pospisil, unveiled the PTPA during the 2020 U.S. Open with the aim of providing representation for independent contractors within the predominantly individual sport of tennis. Although their vision included transforming the association into a fully-fledged union capable of negotiating collective bargaining agreements similar to those in team sports, this ambitious goal has not materialized.

Djokovic’s decision to distance himself from the PTPA stemmed from concerns regarding transparency, governance, and the misrepresentation of his voice and image within the organization. The PTPA took a bold stance last March by initiating a class-action lawsuit against various tennis governing bodies, including the women’s and men’s tours, the International Tennis Federation, and the sport’s integrity agency, alleging systemic abuse, anti-competitive practices, and an outright disregard for player welfare. Subsequently, the four Grand Slam tournaments were added as defendants to the lawsuit.

Despite being a co-founder of the PTPA, Djokovic notably abstained from being listed as a plaintiff in the initial lawsuit, expressing his desire for other players to step up. The legal action aimed at providing players with increased earnings by challenging the existing prize money caps imposed by governing bodies on Grand Slam tournaments and other professional events. Djokovic’s decision to disassociate from the PTPA came after careful consideration, asserting that he would now prioritize his tennis career, family life, and contributions to the sport while upholding his personal principles and integrity.
