PG&E contributes $1 million to support local food banks and feed families

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) has made a noteworthy contribution to local food banks of $1 million to assist those who are struggling to meet their basic needs during the holiday season. This generous funding is estimated to provide around 3 million meals to individuals and families in 47 counties within PG&E’s Northern and Central California service areas. This marks the third donation to food banks by PG&E this year, with a total of $2.37 million being allocated for community food support.

The funds provided by PG&E do not come from customers but rather from the company’s shareholders. The California Association of Food Banks has reported a significant increase in the demand for food assistance, particularly since the start of the pandemic. Stacia Levenfeld, the Chief Executive Officer of the California Association of Food Banks, highlighted the unexpected surge in demand following the federal government shutdown, prompting the organization to seek support from PG&E.

Carla Peterman, Executive Vice President of Corporate Affairs at PG&E Corporation and Chair of The PG&E Corporation Foundation Board, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to support local food banks in their crucial work during a time of heightened need. The longstanding partnership between PG&E and the California Association of Food Banks plays a vital role in ensuring that communities have access to essential resources, especially during challenging times like the holiday season.

In addition to the recent $1 million donation, the PG&E Foundation has previously provided $1.12 million to support local food banks, tribal food banks, and senior meal programs in September. Furthermore, in November, an additional $250,000 was donated to the California Association of Food Banks’ Emergency Response Fund. These contributions aim to address food insecurity issues that affect a significant portion of California’s population, despite the state being a major producer of fruits and vegetables.

The grant amounts allocated to local organizations are determined based on factors such as county poverty and unemployment rates, ensuring that counties with higher levels of need receive appropriate support. This strategy, developed in collaboration with the California Department of Social Services, aims to promote equity and address disparities among communities facing food insecurity, particularly those of color.

The PG&E Corporation Foundation, an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, plays a key role in overseeing charitable initiatives separate from PG&E and is sponsored by PG&E Corporation. PG&E, a subsidiary of PG&E Corporation, serves millions of people across Northern and Central California with natural gas and electric utility services. Their commitment to supporting local communities through partnerships with organizations like the California Association of Food Banks demonstrates their dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of individuals and families in need.
