Ganfeng Lithium faces possible insider trading charges from 5-year-old case
Ganfeng Lithium is currently facing potential charges related to insider trading in connection with a case that dates back five years. The company revealed that it received a notification stating that the case has been moved from the Yichun police to the local procuratorate for a thorough review involving suspicions of insider trading activities.
The case pertains to Ganfeng’s trading activities involving shares of Jiangxi Special Electric Motor, also known as Jiangte Motor. This company specializes in manufacturing electric motors and lithium products. The sequence of events began in August 2020 when Ganfeng entered into an agreement to acquire a controlling stake in Jiangte Motor. This acquisition was intended to assist Jiangte Motor in avoiding delisting from the A-share market after experiencing two consecutive years of losses. Unfortunately, the deal ultimately fell through later that same month.
During this sensitive period, Ganfeng was found to have traded shares of Jiangte Motor through its securities account. This trading activity resulted in a profit of RMB 1.1053 million, equivalent to $157,810. As a consequence, the China Securities Regulatory Commission initiated legal action against Ganfeng in January 2022 and launched a detailed investigation in July of the same year. Subsequently, Ganfeng was directed to forfeit the profits obtained, totaling RMB 1.1053 million, and pay an additional fine amounting to RMB 3.3159 million.
Despite these legal setbacks, Ganfeng has reassured stakeholders that its production and day-to-day business activities will continue without interruption. The company emphasized that the ongoing case will not affect its operational capabilities or performance.
Ganfeng Lithium is renowned as one of China’s leading manufacturers of lithium products, offering a diverse range of over 40 different types of lithium compounds and metallic lithium products. These products find extensive applications in various industries such as electric vehicles, aerospace, functional materials, pharmaceuticals, and more.
In a separate initiative, Ganfeng Lithium is also in the process of establishing a joint venture in Turkey to spearhead a lithium battery project with an estimated investment of $500 million. This move aims to construct a lithium battery facility in Turkey with an annual production capacity of 5 GWh, representing a significant expansion of Ganfeng’s global operational footprint.
Given its prominent position within the lithium industry and its ambitious expansion efforts, Ganfeng Lithium continues to navigate regulatory challenges while maintaining its commitment to innovation and sustainable growth within the sector.
