SEC to continue crackdown on Ponzi scheme promoters
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in Nigeria has assured that Ponzi scheme promoters will face strict enforcement measures to protect investors’ interests. During the Journalists’ Academy 2025 event held in Lagos recently, the SEC emphasized the importance of collaboration with other organizations to prevent unsuspecting investors from falling victim to financial scams.
Mr John Achile, the Divisional Head for Legal and Enforcement at SEC, outlined the agency’s commitment to prosecuting perpetrators of Ponzi schemes under the Investments and Securities Act (ISA) 2025. Working in conjunction with law enforcement agencies like the Nigeria Police Force, EFCC, and the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, SEC is dedicated to ensuring that criminal investigations and prosecutions are carried out.
To combat illegal schemes effectively, SEC has been freezing the accounts and sealing the offices of operators who fail to register their tradable securities and assets with the regulatory body. Mr Achile discussed the deceptive nature of Ponzi schemes, stating that they involve attracting new investors to pay returns to existing investors. Victims are often provided with false or incomplete documents, promised high returns with minimal risks, assured of consistent profits despite economic challenges, and have dealings with unregistered promoters who are unknown to regulators.
In order to shield themselves from financial losses, Nigerians are advised to conduct extensive due diligence and approach enticing “get-rich-quick” opportunities with caution. Mr Achile warned investors to verify with regulatory bodies the legitimacy of businesses before investing. Ponzi schemes can be disguised as investments in various sectors like agriculture, Bitcoin or cryptocurrency, digital currencies, gold coins, or precious stones, making it essential for individuals to exercise caution.
These fraudulent investment schemes not only erode confidence in financial markets but also lead to a loss of trust in regulatory bodies and governments. They hinder deposits in commercial banks, divert savings, cause substantial losses to investors, and trigger socio-economic challenges. By maintaining vigilance and skepticism towards dubious investment promises, individuals can shield themselves from falling victim to Ponzi schemes.
The impact of these illegal activities extends beyond financial loss to investors; it negatively affects the broader economy and society as a whole. Therefore, vigilance, education, and cooperation between regulatory bodies, law enforcement agencies, and the public are essential to combatting investment fraud effectively and protecting the financial well-being of the population. SEC’s unwavering determination to clamp down on Ponzi schemes demonstrates a commitment to safeguarding the interests of investors and maintaining the integrity of the Nigerian financial system.
