SEBI introduces validated UPI handles and unified investor app for enhanced market security

In a significant move to protect investors from online fraud and misuse of funds, SEBI has introduced a new system called “Validated UPI Handles” specifically for the securities market. This initiative, unveiled by SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey at the Kautilya Economic Conclave 2025, is aimed at promoting transparency and enhancing security in capital markets.

The collaboration between SEBI and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has led to the implementation of the “Validated UPI Handles” system, allowing investors to quickly verify whether the bank account receiving investment funds belongs to a legitimate SEBI-regulated intermediary. This effort is part of SEBI’s broader strategy to strengthen investor protection and combat cyber and social media-driven market manipulation.

The Chairman of SEBI, Tuhin Kanta Pandey, highlighted the convenience of the “SEBI Check” feature that allows investors to instantaneously verify the authenticity of a bank account seeking credit for investments. This new system provides an added layer of security for investors, ensuring that funds are directed to authorized intermediaries and not fraudulent entities.

Under this new arrangement, SEBI-registered investor-facing intermediaries will have exclusive UPI IDs with the “@valid” tag, along with category-specific suffixes for easy identification. This formatting enables investors to distinguish between legitimate and fraudulent intermediaries, thus reducing the risk of financial fraud and misconduct.

SEBI has also introduced various digital safeguards to protect investor funds, such as a requirement for stock brokers and clearing members to upstream all client funds to clearing corporations. Additionally, a “voluntary freeze/block” option for trading accounts has been implemented, allowing clients to suspend trading activities in case of suspicious transactions, similar to freezing an ATM card.

Moreover, SEBI has launched a unified investor app to provide investors with a consolidated view of their securities held across different depositories. This app offers a range of functionalities, including viewing transactions and holdings, accessing e-voting for company resolutions, and reviewing proxy advisory recommendations.

As part of its efforts to monitor market activities and combat financial misinformation, SEBI is actively overseeing social media platforms for misleading or manipulative content spread by unregistered “finfluencers”. By tightening oversight on social media, SEBI aims to protect investors from misinformation and maintain the integrity of the capital markets.

Overall, SEBI’s initiatives are geared towards strengthening the corporate bond market, facilitating capital formation, and enhancing transparency in the investment landscape. The regulator’s vision is to create a market ecosystem that is resilient, inclusive, and aligned with the developmental goals of India.
