Kim Keon Hee, former South Korean first lady, faces indictment

On Aug. 30, 2025, the Seoul Central District Court announced the indictment of former South Korean First Lady Kim Keon Hee over alleged corruption during her husband’s presidency. Kim, the wife of former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was also indicted on corruption charges, is currently in detention.

Authorities charged Kim with various crimes, including influence peddling during South Korea’s 2022 by-elections, bribery, and stock manipulation. In response to the allegations, Kim expressed regret for the public distress caused by the situation and asserted that she would take responsibility without offering any excuses. She stated, “I will endure this time by holding on to the truth.”

A special counsel probe revealed that Kim allegedly received free polling data on 50 occasions during her husband’s 2022 presidential election campaign. She also faces accusations of assisting former People Power Party Rep. Kim Young-sun with securing the party’s 2022 nomination. Moreover, Kim is accused of involvement in a stock market manipulation scheme related to shares in Deutsch Motors from 2009 to 2012 and receiving a diamond necklace valued at $34,244.

Sources reported that a high-ranking Unification Church official provided Kim with two Chanel designer handbags in exchange for her support of related projects in Cambodia. Further investigations might lead to additional charges against Kim, as the special counsel’s inquiry is scheduled to continue until Nov. 29.

In relation to the scandal, Kim’s husband previously imposed martial law in South Korea in December, which led to his impeachment and the subsequent legal charges against him and Kim. Former South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo also faces indictment for allegedly aiding Yoon in declaring martial law.

Meanwhile, in another incident, Ahmed al-Rahawi, the prime minister of the Houthi-controlled Yemeni government, reportedly died in an Israeli airstrike in Sana, the capital city. Additionally, a former secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine was fatally shot in Lviv, as authorities continued their search for the perpetrator.
