Eric Trump’s American Bitcoin Revealed

During Donald Trump’s second term as US president, Hut 8’s CEO Asher Genoot and Chief Strategy Officer Michael Ho met with Eric Trump at the Trump golf club in Jupiter, Florida. They discussed a potential bitcoin mining alliance that piqued Trump’s interest. Their friendship formed in late 2024 when Genoot showed Eric photos of their high-tech data center in Amarillo, Texas, prompting Eric to share nostalgic stories of his upbringing on construction sites with his father.

Following their initial conversation, daily meetings ensued, leading to the birth of a new crypto mining venture known as American Bitcoin on April 1. With 80% ownership by Hut 8 and 20% shared among Trump, his brother Donald Jr., and stakeholders from their former business, American Data Centers, Eric Trump took on the role of co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer at American Bitcoin.

American Bitcoin’s CEO, Matt Prusak, previously CEO of Hut 8-affiliated company Ionic Digital, highlighted the value the Trump brothers brought to the table. Capital markets access through their international business connections and the prestigious Trump family name lent credibility to the venture. Although Eric’s status doesn’t guarantee direct access to the president, his network of large family offices and institutions has opened doors for collaboration across continents.

The unveiling of American Bitcoin coincided with growing interest in the crypto market, notably with news of a $2 billion investment in Binance by Abu Dhabi’s government. The alignment of the Trump family’s World Liberty Financial’s stablecoin, USD1, with this transaction underscored their expanding influence in the financial ecosystem. President Trump’s signing of the GENIUS Act, which regulates stablecoins, further solidified his administration’s commitment to advancing crypto-friendly legislation.

Sean Glennan, Hut 8’s Chief Financial Officer, emphasized the strategic advantage American Bitcoin possesses, leveraging the family’s vast following in the digital space. The company set its sights on rapid scalability and efficient operations, with Eric Trump praising Hut 8’s infrastructure and expertise as unmatched in the industry.

With 215 bitcoins mined since its inception by May 31, and $220 million raised from investors by July 1, American Bitcoin aims to bolster its bitcoin reserves through mining operations below market cost. While the company plans to leverage its bitcoins to establish a strategic reserve, details about its acquisition strategy remain undisclosed. The company’s primary market currently operates through Coinbase Prime, aligning with their partnership with Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong to shape US crypto policy.

Despite the surprise it caused within the crypto mining industry, the merging of Hut 8 with the Trump brothers to create American Bitcoin signifies a new chapter in the family’s expanding crypto endeavors. By emphasizing energy efficiency and aligning with the Trump administration’s pro-energy stance, American Bitcoin aims to dominate the bitcoin mining sector while leveraging political ties to secure its position at the forefront of the market.
