IT Department Conducts Survey on Jane Street for Tax Evasion
The Income Tax Department conducted a survey operation at the premises of several broking companies in Mumbai as part of an alleged tax evasion probe against Jane Street, a US-based proprietary trading firm accused of market manipulation, according to official sources. The department is engaged in a verification exercise following a recent action taken by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) against Jane Street.
Sebi issued an interim order on July 3, finding Jane Street guilty of manipulating indices by placing simultaneous bets in cash, futures, and options markets to secure significant gains. Consequently, Sebi barred the hedge fund from accessing the market and seized gains totaling over Rs 4,843 crore. The investigation revealed that Jane Street made a net profit of Rs 36,671 crore from January 2023 to May 2025.
However, on July 21, Sebi allowed Jane Street to resume trading after the company deposited the required amount of Rs 4,843.57 crore into an escrow account.
It is crucial to note that the investigation by Sebi and the subsequent actions have put a spotlight on the issue of market manipulation and the importance of regulatory bodies in ensuring fair and transparent market practices. The probe into Jane Street’s activities sheds light on the need for thorough oversight and enforcement to maintain market integrity and protect investors from fraudulent practices.
By conducting the survey operation at the premises of broking companies, the Income Tax Department is taking a proactive approach to investigate potential tax evasion related to Jane Street’s market manipulation activities. This demonstrates the government’s commitment to upholding financial regulations and holding individuals and entities accountable for any wrongdoing or violations of the law.
The actions taken by Sebi and the Income Tax Department serve as a warning to other market participants that unethical and illegal practices will not be tolerated. It sends a clear message that regulatory bodies are vigilant and will take necessary measures to ensure a level playing field for all market participants.
Overall, the recent developments in the Jane Street case highlight the importance of robust regulatory oversight and enforcement in the financial markets to prevent market manipulation and protect the interests of investors. The actions taken by Sebi and the Income Tax Department underscore the government’s commitment to maintaining market integrity and transparency, promoting investor confidence, and ensuring a fair and competitive trading environment.
