Authorities conduct unannounced raid at HYBE Headquarters over stock manipulation allegations

On the 29th of July, the Seoul Regional Tax Office’s Investigation Bureau 4 launched a surprise search at the headquarters of HYBE, the renowned K-pop entertainment company responsible for managing popular groups like BTS, SEVENTEEN, and TXT. This unanticipated investigation was carried out as part of an ongoing probe into allegations surrounding stock manipulation and suspicions of illegal transactions involving HYBE’s chairman, Bang Si Hyuk. The National Tax Service of Korea, in a targeted probe involving 27 individuals and corporations, specifically singled out HYBE as the leading entity in the entertainment sector on their list.

This is not the first time that HYBE has been scrutinized by authorities. A tax audit conducted by Bureau 1 in 2022 resulted in significant back taxes for the company. However, the current allegations of insider trading and fraud are far more severe. The allegations involve not just accounting irregularities but also elaborate financial fraud and organized stock manipulation activities, with some incidents dating back over the past two years.

To further amplify the gravity of the situation, judicial police officers from the Financial Supervisory Service have also commenced a simultaneous investigation into Bang Si Hyuk, the chairman of HYBE. Reports suggest that the police had been seeking a search warrant against HYBE and Bang Si Hyuk since December of the previous year; however, their requests were repeatedly denied until the latest approval for the third search warrant, which led to the surprise raid on the HYBE premises.

In response to the situation, the company’s Chief Legal Officer has issued a statement to the HYBE staff, urging them not to panic and ensuring full cooperation with the authorities during the investigation process.
