Cost of living worsening, NCF warns

The National Consumer Front (NCF) has recently voiced its concerns over the escalating cost of living, attributing the situation to the Government’s failure to effectively manage the prices of essential goods. According to NCF Leader Asela Sampath, the cost-of-living crisis is deteriorating for ordinary citizens, with prices of food items, electricity, and health-related products spiraling out of control.

Expressing dismay over the unchecked rise in prices, Sampath criticized the authorities, particularly the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA), for allowing prices and utility tariffs to increase without restraint. He emphasized that this negligence is disproportionately impacting the poor and middle-class individuals who are already struggling to make ends meet. The recent hike in electricity tariffs, in particular, has raised concerns as it is expected to trigger a chain reaction leading to further inflation in various sectors, including food prices and other essential commodities.

Sampath highlighted the concerning trend where manufacturers and suppliers pass on the increased costs to consumers, creating a harmful cycle of escalating prices. In light of these challenges, the NCF called upon the Government to implement effective measures beyond simple price controls to address the root causes of the issue. Sampath stressed the need for immediate action to ensure the accessibility of essential goods to the public, especially during peak demand periods like festive seasons.

Drawing attention to the urgency of the situation, Sampath underscored the importance of Government intervention to protect the citizens from the burdensome impact of rising prices and market manipulations. Despite efforts to seek clarification from the CAA Chairperson and the government spokesperson on these issues, these attempts have proved fruitless, leaving the NCF’s concerns unaddressed. As the cost of living crisis continues to escalate, the NCF remains steadfast in its advocacy for concrete measures to alleviate the financial strain on the population and safeguard the well-being of all citizens. It is imperative for the Government to recognize the severity of the situation and take immediate steps to mitigate the adverse effects of rising prices on the most vulnerable members of society.
