Accounting professor trains future tax professionals

Teaching accounting and tax courses in the M.S. in Taxation program at Cal State Fullerton’s School of Accountancy is more than just a job for Roger Idnani – it’s a true passion. The program attracts highly motivated working professionals looking to advance their careers, and Idnani feels privileged to support their development. With over 25 years of professional experience in the tax field, he brings real-world business and tax challenges into the classroom to enhance critical thinking and practical application. Building lasting relationships with students who continue to make meaningful contributions to the tax community even after graduation is a rewarding experience for Idnani.

Idnani’s own accounting journey began when he earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Cal Poly Pomona in 1988, followed by a master’s degree in taxation from Golden Gate University in 1993. His impressive resume includes almost a decade as a tax senior manager at EY, a Big Four accounting firm. Before EY, he served as a tax director at Boeing Capital Corp.

At Cal State Fullerton, Idnani’s teaching activities primarily focus on Accounting Standards Codification 740 – Income Tax Provisions. This course helps students gain a comprehensive understanding of accounting for income taxes under U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, covering various aspects such as identifying temporary differences, calculating deferred tax assets and liabilities, valuation allowances, and analyzing uncertain tax positions. The final project involves preparing tax provision work papers, including the tax footnotes and disclosures required for Securities and Exchange Commission 10-K filings.

The dynamic learning environment at Cal State Fullerton’s College of Business and Economics fosters a high-energy atmosphere where theory and practice intersect. Idnani thrives in this setting, where he can engage with eager and driven professionals looking to enhance their skillset and knowledge in the accounting and tax field. By incorporating real-world scenarios and challenges into his teaching, Idnani provides students with practical experience that prepares them for the complexities of the tax world.

Overall, Idnani’s dedication to his students’ growth and success is evident in his teaching approach and ongoing support. His ability to connect theory to practice and provide valuable insights from his extensive professional background adds a unique dimension to the learning experience at Cal State Fullerton. Students benefit not only from the technical knowledge they gain in Idnani’s classes but also from the mentorship and guidance he offers, fostering a sense of community and continued learning long after graduation.
