US natural gas production and demand expected to reach all-time highs in 2025 before decreasing in 2026, according to the EIA.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Short-Term Energy Outlook has projected record highs for natural gas output and demand in 2025 before seeing a decrease in 2026. Natural gas production in the United States is expected to rise to 105.9 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd) in 2025 from 103.2 bcfd in 2024. Following this peak, production is forecasted to drop slightly to 105.4 bcfd in 2026 after achieving a record 103.6 bcfd in 2023.

At the same time, natural gas consumption will climb to a record 91.4 bcfd in 2025 from the previous high of 90.5 bcfd in 2024 before sliding to 91.1 bcfd in 2026. July projections for natural gas output in 2025 were consistent with those from June at 105.9 bcfd, while demand for the same year was anticipated to be slightly elevated at 91.4 bcfd compared to June’s estimate of 91.3 bcfd.

Further, the Energy Information Administration foresees an increase in average U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports from 14.6 bcfd in 2025 to 16.0 bcfd in 2026, soaring from the record of 11.9 bcfd in 2024. This upward trend in demand is expected to drive significant exports from the U.S. to various international markets.

In contrast, due to anticipated heightened coal consumption by American power generators in comparison to the previous year, U.S. coal production is predicted to rise from 512.1 million short tons in 2024 to 519.9 million tons in 2025. Subsequently, coal output is likely to fall to 475.1 million tons in 2026, the lowest since 1962.

The magnitude of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from fossil fuels is projected to expand from a low of 4.777 billion metric tons in 2024 to 4.836 billion metric tons in 2025 as oil, coal, and gas consumption escalates. However, CO2 emissions are forecasted to decrease to 4.775 billion metric tons in 2026, reflecting a downward trend as the consumption of these fossil fuels decreases.

These estimates, provided by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, suggest critical trends and patterns that indicate both record highs and eventual declines in natural gas output and consumption in the coming years. The projections underscore the importance of efficient energy planning and resource management to meet demand effectively and sustainably in an increasingly energy-intensive world.
