San Diego man sentenced for involvement in multimillion-dollar fraud scheme
A man from San Diego has been sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison for carrying out a massive fraud scheme that swindled millions from investors, including his own family and friends. Denny Bhakta, convicted on numerous counts of securities fraud, bank fraud, and money laundering, orchestrated schemes that deceived relatives, close associates, and government entities, resulting in significant financial losses over several years. He received a sentence of 235 months behind bars.
Bhakta’s fraudulent activities involved soliciting investments for Fusion Hotel Management LLC and Fusion Hospitality Corp, entities through which he misused investor funds for personal expenses and to repay other investors. His unauthorized use of funds encompassed extravagant purchases, such as luxury vehicles, and reckless gambling habits, evident from an incident in which he squandered $1 million in a Las Vegas casino within a short span of eight hours.
Under the guise of purchasing discounted blocks of hotel rooms from Hilton and reselling them for profit to major corporations like United Airlines, Bhakta fabricated financial documents and forged agreements to legitimize Fusion’s nonexistent business transactions. Prosecutors disclosed that Bhakta managed to extract approximately $35 million from investors, including his own uncle, who suffered a substantial loss of $4.5 million as a result of the deception.
Despite facing charges related to investment fraud, Bhakta was further accused of securing 18 Paycheck Protection Program loans worth $4.4 million through misrepresentation of business payroll expenses, staff numbers, and allocation of funds. To bolster his loan applications, Bhakta exploited the identities of victims from his investment scam by falsely listing them as employees of Fusion, thereby obtaining the loans deceitfully.
Bhakta’s illegal activities highlight the extent of his deceitful practices, which extended beyond defrauding investors to include manipulating government loan programs for personal gain. The severity and audacity of his actions underscore the significance of stringent enforcement measures to combat financial crimes and protect unsuspecting individuals from falling prey to sophisticated fraud schemes.
