What AI and feng shui experts predict for Hong Kong stock market in Year of the Snake
Hong Kong investors are gearing up for a year full of uncertainties as they look towards artificial intelligence (AI) and feng shui masters for guidance on what the Year of the Snake has in store for the Hang Seng Index, cryptocurrencies, and the property market.
Calvin Tsai, co-founder of the Hong Kong Programme Trading Research Centre (HKPTRC), has developed an AI model that predicts the trajectory of the Hang Seng Index for the year. According to the model, the index will remain flat in the first quarter, experience a rise in the second quarter, and then decline in the latter half of 2025. By utilizing machine learning and regression analyses, Tsai’s model aims to identify patterns within various factors influencing the market.
In a tongue-in-cheek move, brokerage firm CLSA recently released its Feng Shui Index, offering a light-hearted but potentially insightful perspective on the market’s performance throughout the year. The index forecasts some turbulence in the early months of the year, a significant jump in May, and a period of stagnation during the summer months before finishing the year on a positive note with a “flying snake”.
For a different take on the Year of the Snake’s impact on the stock market, a feng shui AI program developed by Poe, a chatbot aggregator from Quora, suggests that the Hang Seng Index – symbolized by the rooster in the zodiac – will experience improving fortunes in the first four months of the year. However, come May, the market may face volatility due to overheated emotions leading to irrational decision-making. Despite this, the program foresees a smoother path and overall positive outcomes for the rest of the year.
Forest Chan, known as the “wand-bearer” of CLSA’s Feng Shui Index and an equities analyst at the firm, highlighted the snake’s symbolism of adaptability and flexibility. He anticipates a relatively stable and predictable path for the Hang Seng Index in the Year of the Snake compared to the more tumultuous Year of the Dragon.
The Year of the Snake officially commences on January 29 and concludes on February 16, next year according to the Chinese zodiac calendar. CLSA emphasized that its Feng Shui Index is meant for entertainment purposes and does not replace the need for thorough fundamental analyses when making investment decisions.
As Hong Kong markets navigate the unpredictable terrain of 2025, these AI models and feng shui insights offer investors alternative perspectives and potentially valuable guidance for the year ahead.
