Myanmar has imported a whopping 1.4 million tonnes of fertilizers in the last nine months of the current financial year, starting from April 1st. The Urea Fertilizer Purchasing and Distribution Steering Committee shared this data recently.

The committee, led by Union Minister for Cooperatives and Rural Development U Hla Moe, is working diligently to assess the need for more fertilizers and pesticides in the coming months. They emphasized the importance of closely monitoring companies within the Myanmar Fertilizer, Seed, and Pesticide Entrepreneurs Association to ensure that imports are in line with regulations. Only companies capable of fulfilling the import requirements will be granted permits.

To maintain fair pricing and prevent market manipulation, the steering committee is overseeing shops nationwide to ensure that reference prices are being followed, including transport costs and profit margins. They are also coordinating efforts with relevant departments to oversee import timelines and product quality.

Regular quarterly meetings are being held by the Fertilizer Committee to address any potential shortages and guarantee that growers have access to quality fertilizers. So far, after the 41st meeting of the Fertilizer Committee, over 11,500 bags of imported fertilizers have been registered for distribution, with additional registrations still in progress.

It’s reassuring to see such a dedicated effort to support Myanmar’s agricultural sector and ensure that farmers have the resources they need. Let’s stay tuned for more updates on this important initiative.
