Nigerian Court Releases N89 Million in Bank Accounts Linked to Illegal Crypto Activities

The Federal High Court in Abuja recently made a decision that impacts six bank accounts previously accused of conducting cryptocurrency exchanges that could harm Nigeria’s financial system. Justice Emeka Nwite lifted the freezing order on these accounts, totaling N89,484,694.01, after the EFCC confirmed they were not linked to any illegal activities.

This change came after the EFCC filed an affidavit in November 2024 stating that the funds in these accounts were clean. Earlier, in September 2024, the EFCC froze N548.6 million in accounts of suspected crypto users on platforms like ByBit and KuCoin, alleging they contributed to the devaluation of the naira.

Reports revealed that the dollar’s value in Nigeria significantly fluctuated in April 2024 due to activities on these platforms. The EFCC also accused ByBit and KuCoin of disregarding anti-money laundering laws, allowing users to operate illicitly.

After further investigations and court hearings, the EFCC discharged the freezing orders on six out of the 22 affected accounts. The judge decided to unfreeze these accounts based on updated information from the EFCC.
