Intel Raptor Lake Class Action Lawsuit Alleges Issues with 13th and 14th Generation Core Processors
A recent class-action lawsuit has been filed against Intel regarding their Raptor Lake core processors, which are part of the 13th and 14th generation core processors released in October 2022. Complaints about these processors began to surface shortly after their release, with reports of elevated voltage causing damage to machines, even during light use periods.
Despite these issues being acknowledged by Intel in July of this year, a patch was only released in September 2024 to address the elevated voltage problem. However, users claim that this patch slows down processing speed and does not fix already broken devices.
On November 14, a class-action complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, arguing that Intel was aware of these instability issues with the chips since 2022 but did not recall the processors or offer repair options. The lawsuit seeks damages for individuals who purchased specific models of Intel Raptor Lake products mentioned in the filing.
While Intel has issued microcode patches to correct the software issues, damaged processors cannot be repaired. The lawsuit highlights that Intel’s final fix for the voltage issues only slows down affected computers further and does not address existing damage.
Furthermore, the lawsuit points out that although Intel extended its warranty for standalone purchases of Raptor Lake chips, customers with prebuilt computer systems containing these faulty processors do not have recourse, as manufacturer warranties may have expired. This is significant since many users have prebuilt systems with these processors.
The lawsuit seeks certification as a class action to represent all affected individuals and pursue damages for breach of warranty, fraud, and negligence. In addition to compensation for damaged computers, the plaintiffs are asking for Intel to stop marketing these processors, implement a repair or replacement program, and cover costs, damages, and out-of-pocket expenses.
The lawsuit underlines the significant impact on both initial purchases and future resale value due to the damage caused by these defective processors. It emphasizes the need for accountability and a viable solution for affected consumers who have purchased or leased systems with Intel Raptor Lake processors.
