AECOM to Begin Investigation for Northern Metropolis Highway

At AECOM, we strongly believe that infrastructure serves as a catalyst for providing opportunities and growth for everyone. Our commitment to technical excellence is embodied in our TechEx Factor, where connected expertise results in an exponential impact. Through our digital innovation initiatives, our team of technical experts and visionaries harness the power of technology to drive transformative outcomes in various projects.

Sustainability is a core value for us, and we understand the responsibility we hold in protecting, enhancing, and restoring the world’s natural and social systems. One of our key focus areas is transportation infrastructure, where we explore how infrastructure projects can bring about positive change in our society.

Our blog serves as a platform for discussing some of the most pressing challenges faced today and in the future. We emphasize the importance of digital innovation and how it plays a crucial role in influencing our environment, improving lives, and transforming communities. Additionally, our podcast, “Talking Infrastructure,” delves into industry hot topics, key projects, and groundbreaking innovations that are shaping the infrastructure landscape.

Press Release: On April 15, 2025, AECOM was engaged to commence an investigation for the Northern Metropolis Highway, one of the largest upcoming projects in Hong Kong. The Highways Department of the HKSAR Government selected our joint venture to provide technical services for this pivotal project aimed at enhancing east-west connectivity in Hong Kong’s new Northern Metropolis. Mark Southwell, AECOM’s chief executive of the global Transportation business, expressed pride in partnering with the Highways Department to create a smarter and more connected Hong Kong and Greater Bay Area.

Our venture with AtkinsRéalis will assess the engineering feasibility, explore alignment options, conduct preliminary designs, and analyze traffic, environmental impact, land acquisition, and other critical aspects of the Northern Metropolis Highway. Leveraging our extensive experience and knowledge of Hong Kong’s New Development Areas, we will utilize innovative solutions and advanced technologies such as digital twins, BIM, and Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA) to ensure cost-effective designs and accelerate the project timeline.

Ian Chung, chief executive of AECOM’s Asia region, reiterated the commitment to supporting the Highways Department in delivering a world-class strategic corridor that will benefit residents for years to come. The Northern Metropolis Highway is part of the Strategic Studies on Railways and Major Roads beyond 2030 initiated by the HKSAR Government, with AECOM playing a key role in the study. Spanning approximately 23 kilometers, the NMH will connect Tin Shui Wai in the west to the New Territories North New Town near Ping Che in the east, enhancing road connections and easing congestion on existing highways.

The NMH will feature dual three-lane sections and at least eight major interchanges, linking existing roads and new development areas. Comprising four sections – Tin Shui Wai, San Tin, Kwu Tung, and the New Territories North New Town, the NMH will form a new east-west corridor to support future transport infrastructure developments in the New Development Areas.
