Imee Marcos urges officials linked to Duterte arrest to speak truth
Sen. Imee Marcos is calling on government officials involved in the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte to come clean during the upcoming Senate hearing on April 10. Marcos emphasized the importance of honesty in her statement, urging officials to reveal the truth about the events surrounding Duterte’s arrest.
“It’s good that the administration had second thoughts, but hopefully, their announcement signals a true intention to reveal the truth—so that, finally, the nation can gain clarity on what really happened,” Marcos stated, highlighting the need for transparency in the investigation.
During the hearing, which is set to take place on April 10, Marcos plans to give the officials involved a third opportunity to provide an explanation. Senate President Francis Escudero confirmed that key government officials, including Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group chief Maj. Gen. Nicolas Torre III, are expected to attend.
“I don’t have the list, so I do not know who specifically, but there will be a hearing and there are officials who will attend. Senator Imee requested for some of them, like General Torre, who she said has to be at the hearing,” Escudero explained in a recent interview.
In addition to Torre’s presence, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla has also been invited to attend the hearing. However, during the previous hearing on April 3, Cabinet members opted to decline the Senate panel’s invitation, citing executive privilege and the sub-judice rule as reasons for their absence.
Despite the initial reluctance of some government officials to participate in the hearings, Marcos remains hopeful that the upcoming discussion will shed light on the truth and provide the public with a clearer understanding of the events surrounding Duterte’s arrest. By urging officials to speak candidly and transparently, Marcos is emphasizing the importance of accountability and integrity in upholding the rule of law.
As the nation awaits the revelations that may surface during the upcoming Senate hearing, the call for truth and transparency in addressing the complexities of Duterte’s arrest remains paramount. Marcos’s insistence on honesty and clarity underscores the significance of holding government officials accountable and ensuring that justice is served in the pursuit of upholding democratic principles and the rule of law.
