Justice Department decided against prosecuting Ken Paxton, Texas Tribune reports
Tickets for The Texas Tribune Festival are now available for purchase. The Justice Department, under the Biden administration, decided not to prosecute Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. This decision concluded a notable corruption investigation that had significantly impacted his political career. The allegations against Paxton, including claims that he misused his office to assist a political donor, originated from individuals close to him. Following this announcement, the federal investigation, previously under scrutiny within the public integrity sector of Washington, was terminated. Despite substantial evidence to support an indictment, the decision to dismiss the case was reached before Trump’s newly appointed Justice Department officials had the opportunity to act on the investigation.
The ruling was executed by a senior career official, steering clear of interference from politically appointed leaders within the Justice Department. While Ken Paxton’s attorney expressed a lack of surprise over the decision not to prosecute him, the Justice Department declined to comment on the matter. Paxton, contemplating his candidacy for the U.S. Senate, has persisted in the political realm despite facing a series of controversies, including accusations of felony securities fraud and involvement in the examination of the 2020 presidential election results. His resilience is evident, especially after recently settling a criminal securities fraud case by agreeing to a restitution payment of almost $300,000.
Paxton’s legal troubles stem largely from those closest to him, as eight of his aides alerted the FBI in 2020, alleging corruption, bribery, and the inappropriate utilization of his position. Notably, these allegations indicated that Paxton had extended favors to Nate Paul, a personal associate and significant financial contributor to Paxton’s political endeavors. Moreover, Paxton faced impeachment proceedings based on charges of bribery and public trust abuse, but ultimately emerged acquitted by the Texas Senate in a historic case in 2023. The extensive legal battles and accusations against Ken Paxton have been noteworthy due to their impact on his political career and reputation among his peers, despite his ambitions within the political landscape.
