Dropbox names new chief legal officer
Dropbox, a prominent tech company, has recently made a significant change in its legal department by appointing William Yoon as its new chief legal officer. Yoon, who previously served as the company’s vice president for product counseling and privacy, has now taken over the role from Bart Volkmer. Volkmer, who had been with Dropbox for several years, notified the company of his decision to resign, effective March 28, but will continue to advise the company during the transition period.
Yoon has been associated with Dropbox since 2013 when he founded the product counseling team. Over the years, he has taken on various responsibilities, including overseeing product counseling, privacy, commercial, litigation, and regulatory matters. Before becoming the chief legal officer, he served as the company’s chief privacy officer. Yoon brings a wealth of experience to the role, having held legal leadership positions in product counseling and privacy at other tech giants like Facebook and Google.
In contrast, Volkmer had a long-standing tenure at Dropbox, having joined as head of litigation and regulatory matters in 2011. He worked his way up to become the general counsel in 2016 and eventually the chief legal officer in 2020. Volkmer expressed his gratitude for the opportunities and experiences he had at Dropbox, highlighting the company’s achievements during his time there. He commended the legal teams for their role in the company’s success and thanked CEO Drew Houston for his support.
Houston, in turn, acknowledged Volkmer’s contributions to Dropbox, describing him as one of the company’s biggest champions. He appreciated Volkmer’s guidance and leadership over the years and acknowledged the role he played in shaping Dropbox’s journey. Looking ahead, Houston expressed confidence in Yoon’s ability to lead the legal organization through the company’s next phase. He highlighted Yoon’s expertise in product and privacy law, emphasizing his role in moving Dropbox forward.
The appointment of William Yoon as chief legal officer marks a significant change for Dropbox, signaling a new chapter for the company’s legal department. Yoon’s extensive experience in product counseling and privacy, combined with his tenure at major tech companies, positions him well to lead Dropbox’s legal team into the future. As Dropbox transitions into its next stage of growth and development, Yoon’s leadership will be crucial in navigating legal challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
