Dollar General to close nearly 100 stores across the country: How many in Binghamton?

Dollar General recently announced their plans to close nearly 100 stores across the United States, including the Dollar General store on Main Street in Binghamton, which was condemned and permanently closed in July. The company’s fourth-quarter earnings report revealed that 96 Dollar General stores and 45 Popshelf stores are scheduled to shut down in the first quarter of 2025. Additionally, six Popshelf stores will be converted into Dollar General stores as part of their strategic restructuring efforts.

Dollar General’s CEO, Todd Vasos, explained that the decision to close these stores is aimed at strengthening the foundation of their business and better serving their customers and communities. While the number of store closures is less than one percent of their total store base, Dollar General is focused on building upon the progress made in their fiscal 2024 Back to Basics work.

As a prominent retailer with more than 20,000 stores operating in 48 states under various brands like Dollar General, DG Market, DGX, and Popshelf, the company is committed to adapting to changing market dynamics and consumer preferences. Popshelf, a new retail concept introduced in October 2020, focuses on providing customers with an enjoyable, affordable, and stress-free shopping experience, emphasizing seasonal and home décor, cleaning supplies, and party goods.

The success of the Popshelf concept has led to plans for opening approximately 1,000 Popshelf stores by the end of the 2025 fiscal year, although the closure of 45 stores will leave around 175 locations remaining. Despite the popularity of Popshelf, there are currently no Popshelf stores in New York, with the nearest outlet being situated outside of the state.

Detailed insights into the locations of the Dollar General and Popshelf stores slated for closure in early 2025 were not immediately available, as reported by USA Today. However, Dollar General continues to operate numerous stores across various states, with multiple locations in the Binghamton area. These stores cater to the diverse needs of customers by offering a wide range of products and services.

Amidst the restructuring and store closures, Dollar General remains dedicated to upholding its commitment to serving customers and communities across the nation. The company’s presence in the retail landscape reflects its resilience and adaptability in responding to evolving market trends and consumer demands. As Dollar General navigates through these changes, it continues to prioritize customer satisfaction and community engagement as core values driving its business operations.
