TPG names new legal chief from Debevoise law firm

TPG has selected Jennifer Chu to serve as partner, chief legal officer, and general counsel, starting March 31, taking over from Bradford Berenson, who will remain as a senior adviser until the end of the year. Chu brings her experience from Debevoise & Plimpton, where she worked as deputy co-chair of the M&A group and as a member of the private equity group and the healthcare and life sciences group since 2006. Her history includes advising TPG on multiple M&A transactions.

Berenson, on the other hand, came to TPG in 2017 as a partner and general counsel, following his role as vice president for litigation and legal policy at General Electric. His prior professional affiliations include positions as a partner at Sidley Austin and serving as an associate counsel to the President of the US. TPG’s CEO, Jon Winkelried, expressed excitement about Chu’s arrival, highlighting her track record of guiding corporations and private equity clients through intricate transactions and matters.

Winkelried credited Berenson for being an important figure during TPG’s initial public offering and transition to a public entity, as well as spearheading the acquisition of Angelo Gordon. Berenson’s contributions have been valuable to TPG, and his guidance and partnership have been significant to many at the firm.

Chu’s appointment signifies TPG’s strategic move to fortify its legal leadership as the firm aims to expand in various asset classes and geographies. Her experience and leadership skills are anticipated to provide valuable judgment and expertise as TPG continues to navigate a complex business landscape.

Berenson’s retirement after a dedicated stint at TPG will mark a transition for the firm, as his role in crucial events such as the IPO and major acquisitions has played a pivotal part in TPG’s development. His legacy as a trusted partner and advisor will leave a lasting impact on TPG, reflecting his extensive contributions over the years to the firm’s growth and success.

Chu’s background and expertise position her as a suitable candidate to assume the key legal roles at TPG, and her experience stands to benefit the firm as it charts its course in the evolving financial landscape. The anticipation around her appointment underscores the importance of strong legal leadership in firms like TPG, particularly as they navigate increasingly complex regulatory environments and business challenges.
