Globus Medical expands versatility of Advanced Materials Science™ spine implant

Globus Medical, a leading musculoskeletal technology company, recently introduced two new products to its Advanced Materials Science™ anterior interbody portfolio, expanding its lineup for anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) surgery. These launches include the COHERE™ ALIF Spacer, the first Porous PEEK™ interbody spacer for ALIF surgery, and the Modulus™ ALIF Blades, an extension of the Modulus™ ALIF interbody spacer system.

The COHERE™ ALIF Spacer is a unique addition to Globus Medical’s AMS implant portfolio, offering a porous surface technology that promotes bone in-growth while preserving the imaging and mechanical properties found in a solid PEEK interbody spacer. This innovative approach combines the advantages of PEEK stiffness and radiolucency with the osseointegration potential provided by porous technology. These features have been recognized by experts in the field, such as Dr. Frank Phillips from Rush University Medical Center, who highlighted the clinical benefits of Cohere™ Porous PEEK in anterior cervical fusion, emphasizing its role in enhancing patient care for anterior lumbar spine surgery and providing the added advantage of radiographically assessing fusion.

On the other hand, the Modulus™ ALIF Blades offer surgeons different fixation options using the same interbody spacer, enhancing procedural efficiency by allowing anchoring blade fixation immediately after spacer placement. This streamlined approach reduces the number of surgical steps and instruments required during the procedure, providing a more efficient and potentially lower-risk surgical experience. Dr. Anthony Kwon from OrthoCarolina’s Spine Center praised the low-profile instrumentation and streamlined fixation delivery of Modulus™ ALIF Blades as beneficial in minimizing the exposure window traditionally needed for anterior surgery, allowing for a more minimally invasive approach.

These new product offerings further bolster Globus Medical’s comprehensive anterior spine portfolio, addressing a range of challenging procedures in spine surgery. By incorporating a Porous PEEK interbody spacer and Modulus anchor fixation, the company demonstrates its dedication to providing integrated ALIF solutions to surgeons. According to David Hole, president of Spine at Globus Medical, these products underscore the company’s commitment to improving surgical outcomes and offering top-tier solutions that cater to varying patient needs and surgeon preferences, ultimately enriching patient care.
