Boeing forecasts quadruple growth in South Asia’s aviation industry
Boeing projects an exponential growth in India and South Asia’s commercial aircraft industry, expecting a near quadrupling of the region’s fleet within the next two decades. The surge is attributed to the rising demand for air travel, economic development, and enhanced connectivity. The aviation sector in the region is anticipated to experience a robust annual traffic growth rate of over 7% until 2043, supported by air travel liberalization policies.
India’s domestic air travel is set to be the fastest-expanding segment, driven by the growing presence of low-cost carriers and broader network coverage. Airlines are actively expanding routes and destinations to enhance connectivity across the region. Boeing’s forecast highlights that fuel-efficient single-aisle planes like the 737 MAX will predominantly spearhead fleet expansion, constituting about 90% of new aircraft acquisitions. These models are expected to offer improved operational versatility and cost-effectiveness, particularly on short- and medium-haul routes. In contrast, the wide-body fleet in the region is projected to quadruple, as airlines extend long-haul services utilizing aircraft such as the 787 Dreamliner and 777X. Notably, the air travel capacity between India and North America has doubled over the last ten years, with further growth prospects on the horizon.
The Managing Director of Commercial Marketing for India and South Asia, Ashwin Naidu, affirms, “The India and South Asia region continues to be the world’s fastest-growing commercial aviation market due to strong economic and trade growth, rising household incomes, and investments in infrastructure and development.” He underscores the importance of modernizing airline fleets to keep pace with the escalating demand for air travel. Moreover, the air cargo sector in the region is poised for substantial expansion, with the freighter fleet—encompassing both new and converted models—anticipated to grow significantly. India and South Asia are anticipated to bolster their positions in global supply chains, advanced manufacturing, and e-commerce.
In response to the escalating aviation activities, the demand for skilled professionals is expected to soar. The region is projected to require four times the number of pilots, cabin crew, and technicians currently existing, representing the fastest workforce expansion rate among all global aviation markets. This growth in human resources underpins the region’s ability to cater to the burgeoning aviation sector’s operational requirements effectively.
