Reed Reveals Committee Leadership Assignments for 119th Congress
After the Senate Appropriations Committee organized fully, U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) unveiled his committee and subcommittee assignments for the 119th Congress. His roles include serving on four ‘A’ committees, among which are Armed Services, Appropriations, Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, and the Select Committee on Intelligence. He mentioned it was noteworthy that two of the top committees, Armed Services and Appropriations, were a part of his assignments.
For this Congress, Reed will be the Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) and the Ranking Member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government (FSGG). This subcommittee is responsible for overseeing various agencies like the ones that regulate the financial and telecommunications industries, manage tax collection, provide taxpayer assistance, assist small businesses, oversee the White House and judicial branch operations, and supervise the District of Columbia and federal workforce.
Senator Reed shared his excitement about these appointments and how they will help him make a positive impact on Rhode Island. With a position in the Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee, he can contribute to small business growth, enhance economic opportunities, improve broadband infrastructure in Rhode Island, and guarantee the stability of financial markets. Reed expressed his commitment to addressing the complex challenges that Congress faces and ensuring the needs of Rhode Islanders are met.
Senator Reed will remain the Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, a crucial role that involves overseeing the U.S. Department of Defense, military services across various domains, all DOD agencies, and the national security aspects of nuclear energy. The committee plays an essential role in passing the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which outlines the budget and policies for defense programs.
Besides his leadership on the Armed Services Committee, Reed is also a member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense. This position gives him additional responsibilities concerning the allocation of defense funding.
In the Appropriations Committee, Senator Reed serves as Rhode Island’s sole representative, playing a vital role in directing federal funds to create jobs, enhance infrastructure, and support economic and community development projects in the state. He will now shift his focus to the Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee, relinquishing his leadership role on the Subcommittee on the Legislative Branch.
The Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee manages the budget and funding for agencies such as the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). This subcommittee funds several key agencies and programs that directly impact Rhode Island, such as the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and others.
In addition to the Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee, Senator Reed will serve on five other Appropriations Subcommittees, including Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies (CJS), Defense, Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (Labor-H), Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies (MilCon-VA), and Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development (THUD).
Furthermore, Senator Reed will retain his position on the Banking, Housing & Urban Affairs Committee, where he will continue defending affordable housing, consumer protection, and mass-transit while overseeing financial institutions, capital markets, consumer finance, monetary policy, and housing and transit programs.
