Cracked windshields are an unfortunate occurrence that can happen for a variety of reasons. However, if you are a Subaru owner, your windshield issues may be due to a defect in the glass, as detailed in a class action lawsuit that was filed in federal court in New Jersey. In response to this lawsuit, Subaru has agreed to a settlement to address past expenses and potential future costs associated with the alleged defect.

As part of the settlement, Subaru has also extended warranty coverage to eligible owners for any windshield cracks that occur after February 5, 2025. This settlement is estimated to impact around 1.4 million vehicles. Despite these actions, Subaru has not provided any comments regarding the allegations made in the lawsuit. According to the settlement website, Subaru maintains that the vehicles and their components are not defective, emphasizing that they were properly designed, manufactured, distributed, and sold without any violations of warranties, statutes, or laws.

The vehicles covered in the settlement agreement include Subaru Ascents (model years 2019-2022), Subaru Foresters (model years 2019-2022), Subaru Legacys (model years 2020-2022), and Subaru Outbacks (model years 2020-2022), whether they were purchased outright or leased. Those who have already incurred out-of-pocket expenses for windshield repairs or replacements may be eligible for cash reimbursements. For individuals who have not yet replaced their windshields, an extended warranty has been offered to cover qualifying windshield cracks for up to eight years or 100,000 miles, with one complete windshield replacement included in the warranty coverage.

It is important to note that the extended warranty is transferable, meaning that if the vehicle is sold, the warranty coverage will remain in effect until the designated period expires. The deadline for filing a claim under this settlement is January 31, 2025. Claimants can submit their claims online at subaruwindshieldsettlement.com or reach out to the settlement administrator via phone at (877) 495-3524 for any inquiries or assistance with the claims process.

When filing a claim, it is necessary to provide all requested information and supporting documentation, including proof of out-of-pocket costs for previous repairs and photographic evidence of the windshield damage. It is important to remember that claims cannot be filed for windshield damage resulting from abuse, collisions, vandalism, or other non-warrantable causes as specified on the settlement website.
