Lindsay High graduate stepping down as SEC Chief Accountant after impactful career

A prominent financial professional at the Securities and Exchange Commission, known for his straightforward approach and local roots, is set to retire. Paul Munter, a Lindsay High School graduate from the class of 1970, will step down as the SEC’s Chief Accountant, effective January 24.

SEC Chair Gary Gensler expressed his gratitude for Munter’s leadership and expertise during his tenure. Munter took on the role of Chief Accountant in 2023 after joining the SEC in 2019. In his position, he oversaw the Commission’s supervision of the Financial Accounting Standards Board, which issued crucial standards aimed at enhancing financial disclosures for investors.

Furthermore, Munter played a key role in monitoring the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board’s activities and implementing new auditing standards to ensure the quality of financial reports. Throughout his time at the SEC, Munter delivered 22 statements and speeches addressing various financial reporting issues, including special purpose acquisition companies, materiality assessment, risk assessment, auditor independence, and audit firm culture.

Reflecting on his career, Munter expressed his pride in serving investors and financial markets and leading the dedicated professionals in the Office of the Chief Accountant. Before joining the SEC, Munter served as a senior accounting instructor at the University of Colorado and held a significant role at KPMG, overseeing the firm’s international accounting and International Financial Reporting Standards activities. His background includes a Ph.D. in accounting from the University of Colorado, along with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting from Fresno State. He is a Certified Public Accountant in Colorado, New York, and Florida and has extensive experience as an accounting professor at the University of Miami.

Munter’s impact as the SEC’s Chief Accountant was substantial, particularly in guiding the regulation of crypto assets and overseeing numerous financial restatements during the Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) boom. Renowned for his prolific and articulate communication style, Munter did not shy away from addressing challenging financial reporting issues with clarity and confidence.
